High-functioning depression

Still getting through the day, but something's off? You're not imagining it.

High-functioning depression means showing up, meeting obligations, keeping it together — while something underneath still isn't right. You don't have to be struggling visibly for this to be real.

What this actually looks like

Signs of High-Functioning Depression

You're still hitting deadlines, but it takes everything you have to get there.

You laugh, show up, and function — and still feel flat underneath all of it.

You've stopped looking forward to things you used to enjoy.

You're exhausted in a way that a good night's sleep doesn't fix.

People tell you that you seem fine. You are not always sure that is true.

Why it often goes unaddressed

When nothing looks bad enough from the outside, asking for help can feel unearned. Functioning and struggling are not mutually exclusive — you do not have to be visibly in crisis for this to be real.

“A long-time depression sufferer described a dramatic shift from persistent suicidal ideation to genuine hope and positive thinking after completing a course of TMS treatment, crediting the staff’s warmth as much as the treatment itself.”

“I called to get information on the TMS that they offer. Very knowledgeable, friendly and answered all my questions. She didn’t push for me to make an appointment and called a week after to check up on me.”

Can I have depression even if I'm still going to work and handling my responsibilities?

Yes. Depression doesn't always look like being unable to function — for a lot of people, it looks like getting through the day while feeling flat, exhausted, or disconnected underneath it. You don't have to be struggling visibly for it to be real.

If I'm managing okay, do I really need treatment?

"Managing" and "okay" aren't the same thing. If you're getting by but not really living the way you want to, that's worth talking through with someone.

I've never tried treatment before — where do I start?

Reach out to our admissions team for a scheduled assessment call. We'll talk through what you're experiencing and help you understand what options — including therapy or TMS — might fit.

Is TMS an option if I haven't tried medication yet?

TMS was developed specifically for people who've tried medication without enough relief, so typically that history matters. Our team will talk through your specific situation to see what's the right fit.
